FAQ ~ Moissanite

What Is Moissanite?

Moissanite is a stunning gemstone that possesses remarkable beauty and brilliance. It is a lab-created mineral, composed of silicon carbide, and was first discovered in 1893 by French chemist Henri Moissan, hence its name. Moissanite has gained significant popularity as an alternative to diamonds due to its exceptional hardness and optical properties. Its brilliance and fire rival that of diamonds, giving it a captivating sparkle and luster. Moreover, moissanite is known for its durability, making it highly resistant to scratching and breaking. This gemstone comes in various shapes, sizes, and colors, allowing individuals to find the perfect moissanite that suits their style and preferences. With its affordability and remarkable aesthetics, moissanite has become a sought-after choice for engagement rings, jewellery, and other accessories, offering an exquisite and eco-friendly alternative to traditional gemstones.

Can you tell the difference between Diamond and Moissanite?

Distinguishing between a diamond and a Moissanite can be challenging without specialized equipment. Although there are some visual distinctions, they are often difficult to perceive with the naked eye. Moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamonds, resulting in enhanced fire and brilliance.

However, these dissimilarities are typically subtle and not easily noticeable without close examination. Many individuals consider Moissanite to be an exceptional alternative to diamonds due to its captivating beauty and comparable visual appeal.

Does Moissanite hold its value over time?

Moissanite is renowned for its exceptional beauty and quality, and while its resale value may not be the same of that of a diamond, it can still retain value over time. The value of a moissanite piece is influenced by several factors, including the quality of the stone, the craftsmanship of the jewellery, and the current market trends.

One of the advantages of moissanite is its affordability compared to diamonds, making it an excellent investment for those seeking exquisite jewellery at a more accessible price point. While the resale value of moissanite may not reach the same heights as diamonds, because of its initial lower price point, its lower price allows for a smaller margin for depreciation when resold .

It's important to note that moissanite possesses exceptional durability and enduring beauty, making it a valuable and worthwhile investment for individuals who appreciate the allure of stunning jewellery that can be cherished for years to come.

What is LUX Moissanite

LUX Moissanite ™ is our own brand of moissanite, of which we oversee every aspect of our gems from raw material to finishings. All LUX Moissanite ™ is D-F in color and VVS in clarity. Our moissanite is also accompanied by a lifetime warranty to ensure the optimal brilliance of your gemstone forever

Where is Moissanite sourced?

Moissanite, a rare mineral, occurs naturally in only a few select locations on Earth, such as certain types of volcanic rock and meteorites. However, the availability of natural moissanite is exceedingly limited. As a result, the moissanite used in jewellery today is predominantly lab-created.

The production of moissanite primarily takes place in laboratories situated in various countries, including the United States, China, India, and others. These countries have developed advanced technologies and gained expertise in creating gem-quality moissanite.

Therefore, while moissanite is not sourced from a specific country or region, all moissanite is not created equal. We work with seasoned lapidaries that have shown advancements in technology and expertise to produce stunning and high-quality gemstones.

Will Moissanite get dull over time?

Absolutely not! Moissanite is renowned for its exceptional durability and long-lasting brilliance. Unlike some other gemstones, Moissanite does not dull or lose its sparkle over time. It possesses a high refractive index, allowing it to reflect light with remarkable brilliance, resulting in a lifetime of captivating sparkle.

Furthermore, Moissanite is highly resistant to scratches, chips, and abrasions, making it an excellent choice for everyday wear. Its exceptional durability ensures that your Moissanite jewellery will maintain its beauty and sparkle for years to come, providing you with lasting enjoyment and confidence in its quality.

Store your ring safely: When you're not wearing your Moissanite ring, store it in a soft pouch or jewellery box to protect it from scratches or damage.

What is "Rhodium"?

Rhodium, known for its exceptional preciousness, is not commonly used as a primary material for making jewellery due to its inherent brittleness and difficulty in being properly worked for jewellery production. However, it is highly regarded for its remarkable properties when used as a plating. Rhodium plating imparts a stunning, dazzling white appearance to jewellery. Its brilliance is akin to chrome but even whiter, making it one of the most reflective metals available.

It's important to note that rhodium is solely used as a plating and not as the base metal for jewellery. Over time, the rhodium plating will naturally wear off, necessitating the need for re-plating to restore its lustrous finish..

My ring has a yellow tinge, is it real gold?

Certainly! Natural gold carries a yellow colour, and unplated white gold will have a yellow hue, when lacking the brilliance of rhodium plating. Since white gold is composed of yellow gold and alloys, rhodium plating is needed for those seeking the modern "white bling" aesthetic.

While gold itself is highly durable and resistant to tarnishing, rhodium plating is required to maintain the desired white appearance of your white gold jewellery over its lifespan. Regular rhodium plating will ensure your piece retains its lustrous allure for decades to come.

How long will rhodium plating last?

The longevity of rhodium plating varies depending on several factors. For instance, rings, being exposed to more wear, may require more frequent re-plating compared to items such as pins, brooches, or earrings that receive less contact. The frequency also depends on how often the ring is worn and the environmental factors it's exposed to. Factors like body chemistry, sweat, and contact with skin can affect the plating as well. On average, rhodium plating can last anywhere from 3 to 12 months.

Engagement rings that are worn every day and exposed to solutions and chemicals may require re-rhodium plating as frequently as every 6 months, especially if any slight changes in color bother you. It's important to keep these factors in mind to ensure your ring maintains its desired appearance.

Do you offer rhodium plating services?

Absolutely! We provide exceptional rhodium services to enhance the appearance of your jewellery. Please note that the complimentary warranty does not cover rhodium plating services. The cost of rhodium service starts at $90 per piece. To ensure the long-lasting beauty of your jewellery, we highly recommend adding our Limited Lifetime Warranty plan to your purchase. This plan includes an annual rhodium service to maintain the exquisite allure of your piece.

For maintenance services, we strongly advise visiting your nearest Moissy store or sending your jewellery to us for service. This will help prevent any accidental damage that may occur when dealing with other jewelers. Please note that any work performed by unauthorized bench-workers will void your warranty.
